Chipboard

What is chipboard?

Chipboard is made from reconstituted wood, often shavings, chips or sawdust and is held together using natural or synthetic resin and then formed into boards.

Chipboard sheets are an engineered wood product that come in various different sizes and grades and are free from any natural defects. All of our chipboard products have a tongue and grooved connection and can be cut down to size to suit your requirements. What is Chipboard used for?

Chipboard can be used for a huge variety of projects from lining ceilings and walls to making cabinets. It is most commonly used as chipboard flooring, creating a base layer to go beneath flooring products such as vinyl, laminate, engineered timber and solid wood. Chipboard loft panels are also popular as a cost effective solution to boarding loft areas so that they’re suitable for storage.

Chipboard comes in various thicknesses and in particular Howarth Timber offer 12mm to 22mm online.

Our two most popular sizes are:

  • 18mm chipboard flooring: The 18mm chipboard sheets are ideal for flooring but make sure to use P5 graded sheets if you need the chipboard to be moisture resistant. Tongue and grooved edges make it easy to connect pieces together.
  • 22mm chipboard flooring: The 22mm chipboard sheets are the thickest chipboard sheets that Howarth Timber offer. Again, you will need to use P5 graded sheets if you need the flooring to be moisture resistant. The tongue and grooved edges make this product particularly easy to work with.

Grading.

There are different grades of chipboard available and Howarth Timber offer the below options online:

  • P1 is the standard general-purpose grade that is often used in basic building work and joinery.
  • P5 is a structural grade that is moisture resistant, making it a top choice for chipboard flooring.
